New Show opening Friday March 18th, "How I Am" by Shane Murphy

The next opening is this Friday on the campus of Ringling College. Shane Murphy will be performing and displaying site specific installations on campus.

Shane says:

My work is a window not only into myself, but also a mirror for the viewer. I sacrifice myself as a surrogate. I can't change the world. I can't change people. I can't even change one person. What I can do is to nurture within people a to desire to change, and if enough people were to choose to change themselves, it will change the world. I investigate what it means to exist, to live. I pry into the way we react to the human condition. By searching myself and pulling back the curtain on my mind, I alleviate the fear others have of doing the same within themselves.

Ideally Emphemeral is a showing of multimedia experiences by senior fine artists Jeremy Fisher and Therese McPherson.

Jeremy Fisher
On display will be my stop motion short "CROSS." A personal narrative performed by woodland creatures dealing with the nature of existence and the fear of death. My thesis consists of over 1,000 still frames, detailed miniature sets and puppets. Characters in my animation explore questions concerning mortality much like my own investigation into my understanding of death.

Therese McPherson
“Make(Someone) Fond Of and Good At Home Life and The Tasks It Involves” is a looped video that shows repetitive mundane activities which develop and transform as the video unravels. I am telling a story with a language that I have been developing during my senior year at RCAD; I am attempting to examine the notion of Gender roles in a domesticated setting. I have created video loops that are intertwined and slowly reveal both my frustration and acceptance of gender roles in the home.

Featuring the thesis work of Ginger Waugh, Steven Gonzales, and Trisha Ram

4u brings traditional and interactive media together

and presents them as a gift to the viewer. The

show reflects an interest in engaging community

and challenging individual's perceptions. The works

each modify an aspect of our social culture.

Steven Gonzales does this through exploring color

and form to create anamorphic illusion in geometric

prints that reflect a style he calls Regenerative

Graffiti. He takes his original piece of graffiti and

modifies it to create new work, making two-dimensional

objects appear to be three-dimensional.

Trisha Ram's aim is to set up nostalgic moments in

someone's day by making and mailing individual

handmade cards and envelopes to her Facebook

friends, bringing the cyber-social network into the

physical world. She includes a blank response card

with a pre-stamped envelope to encourage recipients

to write back to her.

Ginger Waugh creates opportunities for individual

growth. She feels that discovering our personality

types shows us the framework behind the way we

perceive and interact with our surroundings. Awareness

of our own type and that of others helps us to

be more encouraging, patient, and understanding

with one another.

Our desire is that you would leave the show feeling

as though you had been invited to take a walk in our

shoes and that you'll be challenged to see what's

around you in a new way. We also hope you feel as

though you were welcomed into a community of

friends. "

With the works I am focusing on in Thesis this year, I am expressing my dissatisfaction with the media spectacle of consumerism that is devouring our reality by renouncing symbolism in art. With this rejection of popular culture I am questioning the importance of the role that art plays in our society and hope to initiate a dialogue within the upcoming ruling class on the subject of personal priorities.

This concern stemmed from being overwhelmed with incessant advertisements on a daily basis and the desire to make everything marketable in the realm of invention and creation. I am coming to terms with this encroachment upon my intellect through the processes of screen-printing and assemblage, using words and meditative patterning as content. I hope to reconcile our tedious, industrious culture with the reassurance of stillness and the deep consideration of worth present in disinterested pleasure.

Alexandra Plemmons:
The paintings that i create are interpretations of enviornments that I have experienced while traveling the world. My work consists of breaking down different types of terrain into color, form, line, perception and space. I see our world as purely these elements. Each painting represents a particular landscape that I have experienced. I layer ink, acrylic, and polyacrylic to create depth in these diverse worlds.

Whitley Floyd:
My imagination pulls me into a culmination of these memories of my past with what I am experiencing presently. I channel this simultaneous experience of my past and present state into theatrical installations. My work is an attempt to invite those around me into my extravagant world of bizarre beauty.

Shellie Hoak:
My work revolves around the eco-culture of a Florida native. I use printmaking to express the natural details of wetlands that may have been overlooked, and discuss issues of their destruction with sculpture. My respect for Florida wetlands spawns from the nostalgic experiences of my life, and is represented by the craft and aesthetic sensibilities in the work. With the sales of my artwork, I hope to contribute to wetland restoration projects, help care for my home, and preserve these experiences for others.

My most recent work utilizes drawings, video, and installation to investigate my own ideas about memory, communication, and information.

In this exhibition I will be executing a three movement, performance-based study of binary form. These movements will be performed at 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30 respectively. Also on exhibit will be my thesis project, a work of image-making software that I call the PRBAT (Polygon Replicating Bitmap Authoring Tool). Products of proprietary image-making software are often simulacra of traditional media, but the PRBAT produces images which are inherently digital. The audience will be able to view a large library of images I have made with the software and also use the program themselves.

My work involves the personal, the obscure and the appropriated. These images are altered and transformed through a provisional style. Painting exists in the immediacy of the act. Through a provisional process I am commentating on a perceived laziness. The simplicity of one line and the absence of another can create an image powerful as poetry. My work is influenced by the short attention span that is created from mass images, media and technology. With each painting I am willing to fail.

I always hoped the world would come to an end in my lifetime, preferably while I was still young. As a child I watched in reluctance as the adults around me lived their complicated and dull day-to-day lives until they finally retired or expired. Being exposed to all sorts of cheesy horror and over-the-top disaster films as I was growing up, I could only fathom this world changing so drastically at its end. I am still intrigued by the possibilities and even more intrigued by the effects they presented. Life would suddenly become all the more precious, dangers would become all the more obvious, and people would unite to face a common threat, despite their race or creed, or die alone and leave a world in turmoil behind. Albeit dark and tragic, an apocalyptic world is a romantic one. All the man-made obstacles we once had to overcome in life in the form of bills, paperwork, progress, and moneymaking would no longer exist. Life would suddenly become simple or it would simply end.

I chose printmaking to be the medium of my choice because I feel it allows me to create these apocalyptic images most effectively. Printmaking involves imagining an image first and putting the colors down, layer by layer, and I only know I am finished when the picture is clear and it makes sense. It is not far from how my imagination functions—creating a world in pieces that will eventually fit themselves together cohesively. I have always been a problem solver at heart, and nothing satisfies that in me as well as this media.

Arun Balmick
"I like drawing, plain and simple. It’s become a regular thing for me, changing from hobby to routine. Putting a few pens in my pocket and carrying around a sketchbook or a folded up piece of paper has become a habit. On one hand, it’s largely to keep myself entertained whether I’m in class or out somewhere. On the other, it’s to keep pushing my skills. This is what makes observation so important to me; it’s the middle ground between practice and technique, documentation and storytelling. I also like to draw on my experiences and observations, mixing them with my thoughts to make a cartoon highlighting the issue rather than directly deal with it. I use drawing like a filter to help me tell stories, express ideas or even get a few laughs at my own expense."

My opinion is my work and my opinion is what I think of when I see Japanese culture and fashion. I have been interested in Japanese culture since I was very young and my work has always been based around it. I produce my work from many types of materials and almost all of them are wearable or sculptural. Since my opinion is not just on the traditional culture but on the many different fashion statements, I feel that both are expressed well in wearable art or sculpture. As Japan is a place advancing with technology it comes to a point where it crosses over to the traditional culture and to the fashion as well, which is what I display in my current work.

Rachel Robbins experiments with sound by making connections between the body and appropriated, as well as handmade, electronic instruments. She connects the devices into a system in order to create an interwoven audio and visual space. The audience is encouraged to touch and manipulate the sound producing devices.

I create flat social situations that explore some types of personal-to-public memory intervention, using several varieties of two-dimensional mediums. When making these scenes, I intend to establish a dialog between figures of different origin (Mostly Parties) by placing them in the same literal, or conceptual space.

E. Dannielle Slaughter

Starting from the actual and observed and adding non-existent fantastical elements; I combine them creating a non-archival experience with documented evidence. I like to break down my observations and put them in an order that makes since to me. I am looking to discover the responses of others when I show them a playful spectacle of events and the artifacts and documentation of those events.

The way in which I approach my work often comes from humor and play with the tangible. I started with wanting my work to be indefinable by medium but have begun to realize that I really just want to combine many traditional mediums into one piece; exploring my concepts in a variety of sensory experiences.

Paul Link

Currently my work is about the visceral aspects of painting and how they relate to the world around me and my inability to deal with it in a satisfactory way. My intent is to use aggressive mark making and mostly arbitrary color choices with a literal hands on approach in response to the preponderance of digital media in our culture. I believe digital media can accomplish things that traditional media cannot and vice versa. However, at this moment in time, on the world stage as it exists, for me, it seems work informed by the blatant emotionalism and naive intensity of both German Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism can best demonstrate the chronic, territorial self indulgence of the walking nervous breakdown that is both the planet and my life.

Georgie Landy's statement:

"My artwork documents the environment around me. Using a disposable camera and unedited film, my photographs expose the nostalgic "shitty, but pretty" aesthetic that seems to generate around the lives of young people I encounter. From my environment, I collect trash and found objects based on color and shape, then, put together sculptures and paintings based on that reorganization."

William Ball 's statement:

"My work consists of separate attempts to document my views and experiences with lowbrow culture, and the relationship that it shares with mass culture. The struggles and fears of the general population to understand youth and counterculture are coped with visually through the means of photography and installation. The attempt to portray beauty through those pushed to the edges of our society is a constant struggle in the work. The cliche of a troubled youth is broken down, reassembled, and portrayed in a completely different manner than it would have been portrayed through the eyes of someone living within the boundaries of common society."

Sean Pearson Opens His Show at Crossley Gallery: Frontier Farm, Kazakh Motorbike Malfunction (Farm)

Sean Pearson's statement:

"There is no longer any area of the world that has been left unincorporated and unassimilated by 'late capitalism.' Today, there is no more 'new'; there is no more frontier. There is now a post frontier - a hologram frontier - the idea of the frontier in images that you can access at a local library just outside Helena, Montana. All there is left for social, cultural, and academic navigation is not so much about emptiness, it is about what has already been navigated. It is about re-pioneering and remixing. A theme in my work is imagery such as farms, frontiers, steppes, valleys and plateaus that can manifest a simulated notion of the open range."

Treavor Rennick and Rachel Robbins spent the spring of 2010 studying at the New York Studio Residency Program in Brooklyn, New York. During the semester, Treavor primarily made drawings on paper. His drawings feature a series of hairy spacecrafts and ghoulish characters. Rachel made audio installations that consist of candid and edited recordings. She also produced sculptures using found electronic parts. Her series of sculptures become a part of the installation.

Danielle Slaughter spent her spring semester studying in Antwerp, Belgium. The way in which she approaches her work often comes from humor and play with the tangible. Content is clarified by, and is a result of, collecting information and experimentation with material. Her body of work is made up of both abstract and recognizable imagery from the world around her. "My work is made up of unrestrained realities that attempt to make the incompatible compatible. Asking myself, for example, what physically needs to be altered or kept the same when putting a photograph into a painting or turning a painting into a sculpture?"
